What steps has CEVA Logistics taken to reduce its carbon footprint?
Q&A with Benoit Tinetti, Global CSR Leader
Fighting climate change and reducing our greenhouse gas emissions is a priority for CEVA, as set out in our CSR strategy. We share the aim of achieving net zero carbon emissions by 2050 with our parent CMA CGM Group.
As a whole, the Group is significantly investing in research and development to help the emergence of future energy sources and technologies to reduce the impact of transport and logistics on the planet (mainly climate change, local pollution, biodiversity).
At CEVA, our decarbonization activities fall into three key areas:
Making our warehouses more sustainable
CEVA’s warehouses worldwide are in the process of reducing their energy consumption and increasing their use of renewable energy. CEVA will install:
- 100% LED Lighting in 2024
- 1.2 million square meters of photovoltaic panels by 2025
- 100% low-carbon electricity by 2025
- 40% of CEVA mechanical handling (MHE) fleet with lithium batteries by 2025.
Ground fleet operations electrification
CEVA has committed to reduce the carbon footprint of its Ground operations using low-carbon vehicles.
Development of low-carbon solutions
They will allow to reduce our carbon footprint, and to answer the increasing customers’ demand. Our decarbonization journey depends on our ability to innovate and collaborate with both customers and suppliers. Low-carbon solutions include:
- Modal shift: air to ocean, road to rail or barge
- Alternative fuels, for various modes of freight transport:
- Ocean: biofuel (about 84% CO2 savings, LNG (up to 20% CO2 savings, and massive reduction of local pollutants (SOx, NOx))
- Road: electricity, biodiesel, LNG/CNG, biogas, hydrogen fuel cells, with different CO2 savings
- Air: sustainable aviation fuel (SAF), which reduces CO2 emissions by up to 80%
Does CEVA have any Sustainability certification?
CEVA Logistics is ISO 14001 certified and Colis Privé (acquired in 2022) is ISO 50001 certified as well.
- ISO 14001 is the international standard for environmental management systems. The certification provides a specific framework for implementing relevant sustainability best practices.
- ISO 50001 is the international standard for energy management, based on a principle of continuous improvement and provides a robust framework for optimising energy efficiency.
Human rights, diversity, equity and inclusion
How does CEVA ensure fair treatment of its employees and suppliers?
CEVA Logistics monitors human rights closely both within CEVA and beyond, in its supply chain. Every CEVA Logistics employee receives the One CEVA code upon joining the company. The code details CEVA’s global standards of behavior that apply to all regions, countries and employees worldwide on the following topics:
- Exemplary Leadership
- Workplace Integrity
- Speaking Up
- Conflicts of Interest
- Fair Competition & Antitrust
- Anti-Bribery
- Protecting Data & Privacy
- Vigilance & Responsible Logistics
We implement these standards at every site through local policies responding to local country regulations and laws. Whistleblowing systems and compliance teams are in place across CEVA and help monitor compliance at all of our sites.
In addition, CEVA has a range of mechanisms in place to monitor, detect, and/or address human rights impacts within our supply chain, such as the signature of our Sustainable Procurement Charter or the Supplier Compliance Covenants.
What efforts has CEVA made to promote Diversity, Equity & Inclusion (DE&I)?
The One CEVA code is the global reference framework.
At CEVA, we support:
- Gender equity
- Physical ability and neurodiversity
- Race and ethnic diversity
- Age or generational diversity
- Gender identity and sexual orientation
- Veteran status
Examples of our commitments in action include:
- We rolled out an indigenous Australian artist’s design across several of our long-haul trailers as part of our Reconciliation Action Plan (RAP). The artwork represents a unique and visible expression of the RAP’s place in CEVA’s diversity, equity and inclusion efforts in Australia.
- At CEVA Logistics in Iberia, UK and Ireland, we have created the Empowering Women’s Talent program to develop and encourage female leaders.
- In Malaysia, we are working with our customer L’Oreal to employ people with disabilities within our warehouse support operations, integrating them into the team and giving them access to the labor market.
Supporting communities
Does CEVA Logistics have any programs or initiatives to work with local communities?
We want to engage and empower our diverse, global team to invest time in our communities and to operate ethically and sustainably for our planet.
With a global presence, we have a broad reach and a great responsibility in numerous communities where our employees live and work. Our global team acts locally for the planet. We support and enrich local communities through what we do best: logistics and transportation services. In addition, there are specific community initiatives across CEVA’s worldwide locations, which include:
In Mexico, our team participates in an annual reforestation project and regular clean-up efforts at local parks and community sites in Ciudad de Mexico, Ciudad Juarez, Queretaro, San Luis Potosi, Monterrey, Hermosillo, Tijuana, Ramos Arizpe and Silao.
- Our team in Shanghai, China, together with their family members, takes part in annual Arbor Day tree-planting activities.
- Teams across seven cities in China, South Korea and Japan collected hundreds of pounds of trash during beach cleaning activities.
- CEVA Logistics joins CMA CGM as part of the annual Giving across America initiative, donating thousands of turkeys and the logistics aid to support Families Helping Families (FHF) in their quest to provide families with groceries for the Thanksgiving holiday.
- Our team in Canada coordinates a charity drive for a local women’s shelter, recently contributing three months of food and supplies for the families at the shelter.
- CEVA employees regularly donate blood, like in China where teams from our Shanghai, Dalian, and Anji-CEVA offices rolled up their sleeves to help care for others in need of blood.
- Our team in the Philippines reached out to the indigenous community living in rural areas to deliver food supplies, books and clothes to dozens of families.
- Teams across the globe actively joined in a range of actions to support World Clean-up Day.
