PROJECT OVERVIEW

CEVA Logistics successfully supported CRRC Tangshan in transporting five self-developed double-deck railcars from China to Montreal, Canada. This complex logistics operation involved moving oversized and high-value cargo across multiple modes of transportation, showcasing CEVA’s expertise in handling challenging international shipping projects with an innovative end-to-end solution. The plan involved careful route planning leveraging a multimodal solution of land, sea and rail, specialized packaging and securing techniques and the deployment of our logistics experts throughout the cargo’s journey.

Our customer's business challenges

CEVA faced the complex task of transporting CRRC Tangshan’s high-value, difficult-to-transport and damage-prone railcars more than 12,000 kilometers from the factory in Tianjin, China to Montreal, Canada. The project presented several logistical challenges:

  • Oversized cargo: Each railcar weighed more than 62 tons and measured 27 meters in length, 3.1 meters in width and 4.9 meters in height
  • International transport: The project required a multimodal transport solution with land, sea and rail transport across multiple countries
  • High value product: The high-value railcars were difficult to transport and easily prone to damage.

The Solution

CEVA designed a comprehensive logistics solution to ensure the safe and efficient delivery of CRRC Tangshan’s double-deck railcars from the factory in Tianjin to the project site in Montreal. The 62-ton railcars started their journey through a carefully planned route, traveling from the factory in Tianjin to the Tianjin Port in northeastern China. The railcars were transferred to a cargo ship that then traveled eastward through the Panama Canal to Bécancour Port in Quebec. The railcars were transferred from the ship to rail tracks where they finally arrived at the project site in Montreal.

The double-deck rail coaches, each weighing over 62 tons and measuring 27 meters in length, posed significant challenges for transport. CEVA leveraged its extensive experience, local expertise and professional technical teams to design special packaging and lashing during ocean and rail transport. Every aspect of the solution was carefully designed to ensure the safe movement of the high-value cargo throughout the duration of its long journey. Due to the international route the railcars traveled, CEVA actively assisted with customs clearance procedures in Canda and worked closely with CEVA teams in China and Canada to ensure the smooth export and import processes.
