Leveraging electric vehicle for 5,000-kilometer long-haul transport in China

CEVA Logistics saves 3.4 tons of CO₂ through groundbreaking trial
5/20/2025

PROJECT OVERVIEW

CEVA Logistics in China reached a significant milestone in its commitment to sustainable transport with the successful completion of a 5,000-kilometer electric vehicle (EV) trial across China. This groundbreaking project not only demonstrates CEVA’s dedication to innovation but also underscores its role as a leader in the logistics industry’s transition to more sustainable solutions. Just months ago, CEVA conducted another long-haul EV transport trial of 1,725 kilometers, with this recent pilot nearly doubling the distance.

The trial involved a long-haul journey from Shenzhen in southern China to Alashankou in northwestern China. Using an electric truck, CEVA managed to significantly reduce its carbon emissions, resulting in a 54% reduction in CO₂ emissions and a 43% reduction in energy cost compared to diesel, showcasing the substantial environmental benefits of this initiative.

During the 5,000-kilometer journey, CEVA utilized an EV that was capable of traveling 680 kilometers on a single charge, with an average energy consumption of just 1.11 kilowatt-hour per kilometer. The electric truck only required nine charging stops, with each stop taking an average of three hours.

This efficiency was made possible due to a well-planned charging schedule, mapping the charging stations along the highway, located every 200 to 300 kilometers. The CEVA team strategically leveraged this network to ensure seamless and efficient long-haul transport.

MEANINGFUL RESULTS

Kelvin Tang, Ground & Rail Head for CEVA in Greater China, and the sponsor of this project, expressed his enthusiasm for the trial’s success, "Through leading the market and exploring more long-haul EV transport possibilities, CEVA will be able to connect electric vehicle service from China to Southeast Asia, Central Asia and even Europe in the future," he said. "This trial is not just a step forward for CEVA; it is a significant leap towards a more sustainable and efficient global logistics network."
