The Logistics Backbone of the 2024 Olympic and Paralympic Villages

How CEVA Logistics ensures operational excellence on the ground for the Olympic and Paralympic Villages
8/1/2024

The Olympic and Paralympic Games are the pinnacle of athletic competition, but behind the scenes, they represent one of the world’s most complex logistics operations. Years of meticulous planning and execution are required to coordinate the thousands of athletes, staff, venues and resources across multiple locations. It takes a strong and agile logistics backbone to ensure success on this global stage.

For the 2024 Paris Games, CEVA Logistics, alongside CMA CGM, has been named the Official Partner in Logistics Solutions. This immense responsibility tasks CEVA with ensuring the seamless transportation and operational support of the Olympic Villages, athlete accommodations, venues and more.

Setting up the Olympic Villages

A major part of the logistics behind the Games is setting up and supporting the Olympic Villages. For the Paris 2024 Games, there are several Olympic and Paralympic Villages across France and its territories. CEVA is charged with overseeing the logistics for the main Olympic Village in Saint-Denis, just north of Paris, as well as the villages in Chateauroux, Lille, Marseille and the Olympic Media Village. Across both the Olympic and Paralympic events, these villages will house approximately 15,000 athletes and 8,000 crew members.

Olympic and Paralympic Villages

For the past year, Olympic officials have been building the main Olympic Village in Saint-Denis. With thoughtful design and an emphasis on sustainability, the Olympic Village is much more than athlete housing. The village consists of accommodations, eateries, a medical clinic, a gymnasium and leisure and green spaces. In the three and a half months leading up to the events, CEVA has undertaken a staggering accommodation setup.Leveraging more than 68,000 square meters of warehousing space, teams have carefully stored, transported and assembled more than 225,000 pieces of furniture and household items—from beds and coffee makers down to the very last pillow. Each national team has specific requirements that CEVA has meticulously addressed to ensure comfort and a high standard for the prestigious events.

With more than 75 buildings in the main Olympic Village, it takes precise planning—of materials, labor and transportation—to execute such an elaborate setup. CEVA employees dedicate their time and energy on the ground setting up every aspect of the Olympic Village, including the dining hall where more than 60,000 meals will be served every day. Orchestrating the setup of such an expansive village requires more than 200 CEVA staff, including team leads, operations managers and temporary workers—all trained and prepped in-house. An additional 100 employees are brought in to support operations on the ground during the Games.

24/7 Onsite support

Once the competition commences, CEVA’s role evolves into comprehensive site operations. CEVA’s onsite village support extends to serve as the Olympic Villages’ logistics concierge for the duration of the events. Need a new coffee pot in your room? Call CEVA. Cafeteria low on supplies? CEVA is on it. An athlete needs a bottle of water in the middle of the night? CEVA is there to help. CEVA’s multilingual, multicultural staff will run a 24/7 support desk, promptly addressing every request and issue through a digital management system.

While the world celebrates the closing of the Olympic Games, CEVA teams will swiftly transition the Olympic Village to the Paralympic Village over just four days. CEVA teams will refresh all accommodations, ensuring venues are accessible and work through the seamless hand-off between the two world-class sporting events.

Closing time

At the end of the Paralympic Games, CEVA teams will be dedicated to carefully disassembling the massive Olympic Games infrastructure. Many of the Olympic Village buildings are slated for repurposing as public housing and commercial spaces, so every item must be carefully inventoried, transported and stored for future use or distribution. CEVA will deploy 500 people to execute the take down of the Olympic Villages, nearly double of that required to set up.

The 2024 Games represent a major logistical achievement for CEVA. From the initial planning and groundwork to growing and training new CEVA teams to support such a major event, CEVA’s expertise and dedication to logistics will deliver a world-class experience for athletes and spectators alike.
