'Leading through Change'

Meet Susanne Schustin, Chief Information Officer of CEVA Logistics
9/10/2024

Susanne joined CEVA Logistics in 2023 as Chief Information Officer (CIO) with an impressive IT background in complex, global environments. Her journey reflects a dedication to transformation and innovation in IT ecosystems in order to serve the greater mission of the organization.

Would you tell us about your professional journey to arrive at CEVA?

Well, I joined CEVA in 2023, bringing with me 31 years of IT transformation experience. My previous roles spanned a large range of positions across the service provision and IT operations landscape. For my last position directly before CEVA, I was the CIO of a global transport company that needed a radical transformation after being the victim of a cyber-attack. The project represented a significant challenge for us, so rebuilding the IT environment ended up being a major achievement for me and my entire team. The success we experienced and my leadership on the project helped earn me the recognition of “CIO of the Year” in Denmark in 2023. After that experience, I wanted to challenge myself even further by contributing to a global company—ideally one with a rapid growth trajectory and a commitment to innovation—and CEVA offered me the perfect opportunity

Entering the logistics industry was by pure chance for me. After years of working on cutting-edge cloud technology, I found the logistics and supply chain industry fascinating due to its vast data sets and use cases, as well as its relational, but direct culture. It’s an industry that suits my pragmatic nature.

To me, leadership is about inspiring and motivating. It’s about helping others believe that we can create something greater, together.

What does leadership mean to you?

Leadership means being versatile—wearing multiple hats. As an IT leader, I set a direction—I define purpose that aligns with our overall business goals. At the same time, leadership demands strong communication skills and the ability to inspire others. I can set a direction, but I also must help my team understand and embrace that journey for us to achieve all that is possible. To me, leadership is about inspiring and motivating. It’s about helping others believe that we can create something greater, together.

One person who has helped shape my leadership style is Satya Nadella, CEO of Microsoft—his well-rounded personality and humble sense of self-worth has inspired me. More generally, I am inspired by all leaders with an authentic and open leadership approach. I see it here at CEVA in the way Mathieu Friedberg, our CEO, approaches our senior leadership meetings. This style of inviting respectful candor really resonates with me.

Balancing decisive action with an openness to feedback demands clear communication, so it’s a key component in how I create equal partnerships and maintain relationships across the business. Everyone has their area of expertise, so when we respect, appreciate and invite that from each other at all levels of an organization, leaders demonstrate a certain humility and an approachableness that resonates with their teams. I believe authenticity is foundational for inspiring and motivating people.

What are some hallmarks of your personal leadership style?

I have always led by starting with setting adequate expectations. Especially in times of change, I believe that it’s important to prepare teams for the journey. Committing to communication helps move them along a curve from uninformed optimism to informed pessimism and eventually to informed optimism. So, transparency and openness with the team are key since I aim to make the transformation journey a collective one. I also like to focus on continuous learning and feedback. Agile transformation ensures that we’re always improving and adapting to new challenges that may arise.

What do you want to accomplish at CEVA?

First, I want to support our corporate vision for the near term: extending our leadership position as a global logistics player. As I believe IT is a key component to seeing this vision become reality, my goal is to build a mature, global IT ecosystem that enables our business operations, allowing us to achieve our objectives.

Next, what we’re building—the planning and the execution—requires the best IT talent. So, we’re welcoming new employees. We’re empowering current ones. We’re building a culture together that reflects our values as we traverse a period of significant growth and transformation.

As CEVA’s CIO, technology and digital innovation are, of course, at the core of our transformation. Within CEVA, we define innovation as the implementation of new ideas with business impact. So, everything we pursue—whether a new way of working, a new algorithm or a new IT system—needs to bring value to the business and how we deliver on our brand promise of Responsive Logistics. Our customers rightly expect certain solutions from us, delivered in a certain way. In many areas, technology enables us to provide these solutions, insights and support to our customers. We have a wealth of quickly evolving tools at our disposal—AI, machine learning, for example—that are fascinating and propose numerous solutions to the challenges within our industry.

Finally, we also live in a world facing an ever-evolving list of challenges. I’m convinced that for one of those—climate change—technology can play a crucial role in creating more sustainable operations within our industry. Being a part of that transformation will be a major accomplishment, and I look forward to supporting CEVA’s role in driving decarbonization in the global supply chain.

How would you describe CEVA right now?

CEVA is a diverse company in terms of our logistics solutions, our tech, and our global presence and workforce. We have a strong entrepreneurial spirit, thanks to our long history and our values as part of the CMA CGM Group. So, we have a healthy appetite for growth, while continuing to focus on our current operations and customers.

We’re people oriented. Logistics is a people business, so externally, I think our focus on serving our customers and partnering with them to truly solve their supply chain problems sets us apart. Internally, with our global workforce, CEVA’s diversity and entrepreneurial spirit make us unique. We tackle difficult challenges with a relentless customer focus and a global culture of teamwork and respect. This passion and adaptability are two key strengths.

Our IT landscape will continue to evolve in support of our strategic goals. I’m confident that our expertise and our agility will keep us well positioned to successfully navigate future opportunities and challenges.
