Lean Principles at CEVA Logistics: Making sure that Lean is not just an empty Phrase
CEVA Logistics is an international company with several thousand employees worldwide. To make sure that despite the many stakeholders, there are no unnecessary processes, we adhere to the Lean approach. This means that we’re actively encouraging our staff to recognize, report and ideally remove waste.
For the efficient implementation of the Lean method, we introduced so-called BPE Teams. Three team members explain what they’re doing as Business Process Engineers at CEVA Logistics, how they got to that position, and what they particularly enjoy in their daily work.
Successful teamwork and exciting growth opportunities
The hanseatic city of Hamburg hosts our Kitfactory site. This is the place of work for Karla and Simon from the BPE team. Karla has already been working here for more than three years. She actively decided to move to CEVA after the Head of Logistics at the time convinced Karla that making the switch would mean working autonomously while getting interesting growth opportunities. And until this day, she has not regretted her decision. It’s particularly her Kitfactory colleagues who make the difference for Karla. “We support each other when there’s more tasks than time at hand. We also get along well outside of work context.” She also appreciates that her tasks are comprehensive and therefore rich in variety.
Getting started after graduation
Simon joined Kitfactory about six months after Karla. At first, he was a working student and also wrote his thesis at CEVA. In April 2022, Simon was hired as a local BPE at the site. When he was still a working student, Simon was already enthusiastic about the site and the BPE Team. He also emphasizes that all colleagues have been very friendly and supportive from day one. Back then, he already got to show his skills within the BPE Team by uncovering a lot of opportunities for improvement and optimization. This is what Simon particularly likes about the Hamburg site: “The great work environment, the interesting tasks and the people who enjoy helping out with new tasks and have a hands-on mentality.”
Co-design, versatility and close employee loyalty
Bianca is a part of the BPE Team at the CEVA Logistics site in Wolfsburg and has been here for 20 years. During her time at CEVA, Bianca has witnessed and actively contributed to many model versions and changes. For Bianca, it’s primarily the active contribution to process changes, internal BPE activities (newsletter, intranet, Primo, Contract Review, etc.), and the close cooperation with and support of the operational part of the site that make her job what it is and keep things interesting. Another aspect of the variety of her job is the fact that being a Business Process Engineer is not just sitting at your desk all day, but also actively going to the shop floor, for example to support trainings. After all these years, Bianca still appreciates the approachability and direct contact to the customer.

Damit Lean mehr als nur ein Schlagwort ist
Mit 110.000 Mitarbeitenden weltweit ist CEVA Logistics ein großes, internationales Unternehmen. Um sicherzustellen, dass trotz der vielen involvierten Personen keine überflüssigen Prozesse entstehen, haben wir uns dem Lean-Ansatz verschrieben. Das bedeutet, wir ermutigen unsere Mitarbeitenden aktiv dazu, Verschwendungen zu erkennen, zu melden und bestenfalls zu beseitigen. Zur effizienten Umsetzung dieser Methode haben wir sogenannte BPE-Teams zusammengestellt. Drei unserer Teammitglieder berichten, was sie als Business Process Engineers bei CEVA Logistics machen, wie sie zu ihrem Job gekommen sind und was ihnen an ihrem Arbeitsalltag besonders gefällt.
Erfolgreiches Teamwork und spannende Wachstumschancen
In der Hansestadt Hamburg befindet sich unser Standort Kitfactory. Dort sind Karla und Simon Teil des BPE-Teams. Karla ist bereits seit über drei Jahren dabei und hat sich aktiv für einen Wechsel zu CEVA entschieden, nachdem der damalige Logistikleiter sie davon überzeugt hat, dass sie in der Kitfactory selbstständig arbeiten kann und zusätzlich interessante Wachstumschancen geboten bekommt. Bereut hat sie diesen Schritt bis heute nicht. Es sind vor allem die Kolleginnen und Kollegen, die für Karla den Unterschied machen. „Wir unterstützen uns gegenseitig, wenn es mal mehr Aufgaben gibt als Zeit, die zu Verfügung steht. Wir verstehen uns auch abseits von Arbeitsthemen gut.“ Außerdem gefällt ihr, dass ihr Aufgabenspektrum sehr umfassend und dadurch auch entsprechend abwechslungsreich ist.
Der Einstieg nach dem Studium
Simon hat ungefähr ein halbes Jahr nach Karla in der Kitfactory angefangen. Zunächst arbeitete er als Werkstudent und hat auch seine Masterarbeit bei CEVA geschrieben. Im April 2022 wurde er dann als lokaler BPEler am Standort eingestellt. Bereits in seiner Zeit als Werkstudent war Simon begeistert von CEVA und dem BPE-Team. Auch er hebt hervor, dass die Kolleginnen und Kollegen von Anfang an sehr freundlich und stets hilfsbereit waren. Damals hat er auch bereits sein Können im BPE-Team beweisen können, da er viele Verbesserungsmöglichkeiten und Optimierungen entdeckte. Am Hamburger Standort weiß Simon besonders folgende Aspekte zu schätzen: „Das tolle Arbeitsklima, die spannenden Aufgabenbereiche und die Menschen, die gerne bei neuen Aufgaben anpacken und eine Hands-on-Mentalität haben.“
Mitgestaltung, Vielseitigkeit und enge Mitarbeiterbindung
Bianca ist am CEVA Logistics Standort Wolfsburg Teil des BPE-Teams und das schon seit 20 Jahren. In ihrer Zeit bei CEVA hat Bianca eine Vielzahl an Modellauflagen und -änderungen miterlebt und diese aktiv mitgestaltet. Für Bianca ist es vor allen Dingen das aktive Mitwirken an Prozessänderungen, die internen BPE-Aktivitäten (Newsletter, Intranet, Primo, Contract Review etc.) und die enge Zusammenarbeit mit und Unterstützung für den operativen Teil des Standortes, die ihren Job ausmachen und für Abwechslung sorgen. Ein weiterer Aspekt dieser Abwechslung ist, dass man als Business Process Engineer nicht den ganzen Tag am Schreibtisch sitzt, sondern auch aktiv auf die Fläche geht, z. B., um bei Trainings zu unterstützen. Nach all den Jahren weiß Bianca noch immer die Nähe und den direkten Kontakt zum Kunden zu schätzen.
