Nick Otter is one of them. Since September 2021, he has been working in Bleiswijk (then still under the banner of Ingram Micro CLS, which became CEVA Logistics on April 01) on his own 'Fulfilment of Happiness'.
Shortly employed and already making great leaps within the team. Thus, the first steps have been made in his growing career, and the road to opportunities is open to him.
From school to the Control Room in Bleiswijk
In 2021 Nick completed his Master's degree in International Supply Chain Management at the Hogeschool Rotterdam and was soon approached by a Recruiter within Ingram Micro’s Commerce & Lifecycle Services (now part of CEVA Logistics). Within one week, Nick had had two interviews, signed his contract, and started working in the Control Room.
"Last June, I had my first interview, which felt good. The following week I had the second interview, and the day after, I signed my contract. It went very quickly, but it felt good. At that time, I did not know the company very well. Within the logistics world, I had heard the name and told myself that this would be a cool place to work, but over time I lost sight of the company. When I was approached, I dug deeper and rediscovered the company. It is a big company, but I am no way just a number; everyone on-site knows each other. You build up your own team, and speak to the people on-site. You work together for the best result. Because ultimately you want to achieve the KPIs and ensure that the customer is satisfied."
Career Fulfillment at the Zalando site
"I started out as an Operations Control Specialist, dealing with the daily management of the process within the warehouse. Within the department, various targets were assigned to the team. If you see that you are falling behind the target, you manage it and ensure that the operation continues to run smoothly. I did this from September 2021 to January 2022 and then advanced to Process Control Specialist. My tasks were expanded, so I had to look at the bigger picture in the long term. The focus still lies on optimizing the process, but this is now done more in consultation with the team leaders and operations managers. You start looking together at how you can work better and even more efficiently. I am also responsible for personnel planning, and I am in contact with the transport department and responsible for achieving the KPIs."
In a short time, Nick has made rapid progress in his career. Within four months, he advanced from Operations Control Specialist to Process Control Specialist.
"What I like about the company is the many growth opportunities. For example, I have grown from Operations to Process Control Specialist within a relatively short time. I also noticed that I had grown personally as a result. I am more assertive, know how to better articulate what is needed for the process to run smoothly, and know where I can contribute, and the managers recognized that too. You are more trusted to handle certain issues. That way, you can show even more of the knowledge you have acquired and create a pleasant working environment together. That is also where I get satisfaction from my work in the Control Room. You are responsible for the tasks, and you are constantly trying to improve the process within the warehouse. And when you see what you put down on paper being implemented in the operation, and that this has led to improvement, that gives me a lot of energy."
A place full of ambitions
"In a short time, I feel I have grown considerably in my career. I think that is also the fun part of the company. Because the team is quite young, we are still pretty much at the beginning. I started on 1 September, and the first truck arrived at the end of September. This has allowed me to experience it all from the beginning and helped me see the big picture of the process. Being part of a large organization has its advantages. It is well organized and professional. There is someone you can turn to for any question. The doors are always open. Everyone is also open to this. There is also plenty of growth potential within the company. There is always an opportunity for further development at your current location or another location."
An open culture, that's what we have
"I'm not going to say that we're informal here, that's a bit of a dead giveaway because so many companies have made that claim. But I can say that you can knock on anyone's door if you have questions, want to talk or just want to have a quick chat. "
"Dare to make decisions. That is a tip I would like to give everyone, and especially potential employees in the Control Room. Dare to make a decision based on your knowledge and data. If it goes differently than expected, don't run away from the consequences. It may happen that your decision is not entirely the right one, but as long as you stand behind this choice, we can all learn from it. And from there, you and your team can only grow and go for even better results.”
A larger network with new opportunities
Since April, Ingram Micro CLS has been acquired by CEVA Logistics. This offers new opportunities and possibilities within a company. And Nick also sees the benefits of this. "We are bigger now. First, you learned from the sites and the people within Ingram Micro. Now we are a lot bigger, and there are even more opportunities to broaden your knowledge. Your network grows, and so do the opportunities to grow. I'm inquisitive about that."

“Zo ben ik in korte tijd van Operations naar Process Control Specialist gegroeid”

Zo ook Nick Otter. Sinds september 2021 werkt hij in Bleiswijk (toen nog onder de vlag van Ingram Micro CLS, wat per 01 april CEVA Logisitics is geworden) aan zijn eigen ‘Fulfilment of Happiness’. Kort in dienst en nu al grote sprongen gemaakt binnen het team. Zo zijn de eerste stappen gemaakt in zijn groeiende carrière en ligt de weg naar mogelijkheden voor hem open.
Van de schoolbanken naar de Control Room in Bleiswijk
In 2021 rondde Nick zijn studie Master in International Supply Chain Management aan de Hogeschool Rotterdam af waarna hij al snel werd benaderd door een Recruiter binnen Ingram Micro, nu onderdeel van CEVA logistics. Binnen 1 week had Nick twee gesprekken gehad, zijn contract ondertekend en kon hij aan de slag in de Control Room.
“Vorig jaar juni had ik het eerste gesprek wat goed voelde. De week erop het tweede gesprek en de dag erna kon ik mijn contract al tekenen. Het ging heel snel, maar het voelde goed. Ik kende Ingram Micro niet heel goed. Binnen de logistieke wereld had ik de naam al wel eens gehoord en zei ik al tegen mijzelf dat dit een gaaf bedrijf zou zijn om later te werken, maar in de loop van de tijd ben ik het bedrijf uit het oog verloren. Toen ik benaderd was, ben ik er dieper in gaan duiken en ging er weer een belletje rinkelen bij mij. Het is een groot bedrijf, maar ondanks dat ben ik geen nummer en kent iedereen op locatie elkaar. Je bouwt je eigen team op, spreekt de mensen op locatie en samen ga je voor het beste resultaat. Want uiteindelijk wil je de KPI’s behalen en zorgen dat de klant tevreden is.”
Career Fulfilment bij de site van Zalando
“Ik ben begonnen als Operations Control Specialist waar ik mij bezig hield met de dagelijkse sturing van het proces binnen het warehouse. Binnen de afdelingen zijn er verschillende targets die je moet halen, zie je dat een target achterloopt dan stuur je daar op aan en zorg je ervoor dat de operatie goed blijft lopen. Dit heb ik van september 2021 tot januari 2022 gedaan en ben toen doorgegroeid naar Process Control Specialist. Mijn taken werden uitgebreid en hierdoor moest ik naar het grotere plaatje op de lange termijn kijken. Nog steeds ben je bezig met het optimaliseren van het proces, maar dit doe je nu meer in samenspraak met teamleiders en operations managers. Je gaat dan meer samen kijken hoe je nog efficiënter en beter te werk kan gaan. Daarnaast ben ik verantwoordelijk voor de personeelsplanning, heb ik contact met de transportafdeling en ben ik verantwoordelijk voor het behalen van de KPI’s.”
In korte tijd heeft Nick grote stappen mogen zetten in zijn carrière bij Ingram Micro, nu onderdeel van CEVA Logistics. Zo is hij binnen 4 maanden doorgegroeid van Operations Control Specialist naar Process Control Specialist.
“Het leuke aan het bedrijf is dat er veel groei mogelijkheden zijn. Zo ben ik in korte tijd van Operations naar Process Control Specialist gegroeid. Zo merk ik ook dat ik hierdoor ook een persoonlijke ontwikkeling heb doorgemaakt. Ik sta steviger in mijn schoenen, weet beter te verwoorden wat er nodig is om het proces goed te laten verlopen en weet waar ik mijn steentje bij kan dragen. En dat wordt ook gezien door de managers. Je wordt sneller betrokken bij bepaalde issues. Zo kan je nog meer je opgedane kennis laten zien en zorg je samen ook voor een fijne werkomgeving. Dat is ook waar ik voldoening uit haal tijdens mijn werk in de Control Room. Je hebt verantwoordelijkheid en je bent continue bezig om het proces te verbeteren binnen het warehouse. En als je ziet wat je op papier zet, dat het uitgevoerd wordt in de operatie en dat dat zorgt voor verbetering, dat geeft mij ontzettend veel energie.”
Een plek vol ambities
“In korte tijd heb ik een flinke groei gemaakt. Dat is ook het leuke aan het bedrijf vind ik. Want het team is best jong, we staan nog steeds redelijk aan het begin. Ik ben 1 september 2021 begonnen en eind september kwam de eerste vrachtwagen binnen. Zo heb ik het allemaal vanaf het begin meegemaakt en daardoor merk ik wel dat ik van veel op de hoogte ben. Dat de organisatie groot is heeft dan ook zo zijn voordelen. Het is goed georganiseerd, professioneel en je kan met elke vraag wel bij iemand terecht. De deuren staan altijd open waardoor je gemakkelijk met je vragen bij iemand terecht kan. Iedereen staat hier ook voor open. Zo zit er ook voldoende groei potentie binnen het bedrijf. Of dat op je huidige locatie is of op een andere locatie, er is altijd wel een mogelijkheid om je verder te ontwikkelen.”
Een open cultuur, dat is wat wij hebben
“Ik ga niet zeggen dat we hier informeel zijn, dat is een beetje een dooddoener want dat zeggen zoveel bedrijven. Maar ik kan wel zeggen dat je bij iedereen kan aankloppen als je vragen hebt, een praatje wilt maken of om even te sparren. “
“Durf beslissingen te maken. Dat is wel een tip die ik iedereen, en vooral potentiële werknemers voor de Control Room wil mee geven. Durf een beslissing te maken wanneer je daar achter staat. En loopt het anders dan verwacht, loop dan niet weg van de gevolgen. Het kan wel eens voorkomen dat de beslissing die je maakt niet helemaal de juiste is, maar zolang jij achter deze keuze staat leren we daar met zijn allen van. En vanuit daar kan je alleen maar met je team doorgroeien en gaan voor nog betere resultaten.”
Een groter netwerk met nieuwe mogelijkheden
Sinds april is Ingram Micro CLS overgenomen door CEVA Logistics. Dit biedt nieuwe kansen en mogelijkheden binnen een bedrijf. En ook Nick ziet daar de voordelen van in. “We zijn nu groter. Eerst leerde je van de sites en de mensen binnen Ingram Micro. Nu zijn we een stuk groter en zijn er nog meer mogelijkheden om je kennis te verbreden. Je netwerk groeit en zo ook de mogelijkheden om door te groeien. Daar ben ik heel benieuwd naar.”
